WMO Commends NiMet’s Boss, Agency’s Contribution, Leadership Role in Africa

By Mohammed Mohammed

The World Meteorological Organisation, (WMO) has acknowledged the immense contribution, leadership and support of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) towards the growth and progress of WMO and its activities both nationally and regionally, even as the global body commended the Director General (DG/CEO) of the agency, Prof. Mansur Matazu, for demonstrating sterling leadership capacity moving the agency forward.

In a letter of commendation, the Director, WMO Regional Office for Africa, Dr. Amos Makarau stated that WMO is impressed with the Federal Government and NiMet for the implementation of the host country agreement signed between NiMet and WMO.

He further called on Nigeria to continually show its leadership role in the African continent.

Makaru, said: “May Nigeria continue to show true and unwavering contribution and leadership to the work of WMO in Africa. I know NiMet has been rendering unsolicited capacity development-related support to a number of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services, NMHSs, in Africa.

“You may think this as small step by NiMet, but to us in the Regional Office, it is a giant leap. I am certain the Abuja Office is now in the best shape and in very capable hands.”

Recall that, on the 23rd of March, 2022, NiMet, commemorated the World Meteorological Day with a presentation of a brand-new car by the Director-General/CEO NiMet, Prof. Mansur Matazu to the WMO office, Abuja.

This gesture was also acknowledged by Makarau who said “On behalf of the Regional Office for Africa, which includes the Representative Office for North, West and Central Africa and on my own behalf, I wish to acknowledge, with extreme gratitude, receipt by the Abuja Office of a utility vehicle to support the WMO Office.”

NiMet, remains committed to the integration and progress of meteorology in Nigeria and the African continent, through technical support to other National Meteorological Organisations buoyed by the continuous assistance the agency receives from the World Meteorological Organisation, WMO.

The GM/PR Department, Mr. Muntari Yusuf Ibrahim, signed the statement on behalf of the agency.
