Review electoral laws to stop off-cycle elections, Ex-President Jonathan tells National Assembly

By Faith Awa Maji

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has appealed to the National Assembly to ensure they do all it takes to stop off-cycle elections in Nigeria.

He stated this on Saturday, in his home town Otuoke, Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa, arguing that off-cycle elections do not constitute global best practices.

He spoke on the sidelines of the governorship elections in Bayelsa, Kogi and Imo States holding today Saturday the 11th of November, 2023.

According to him, “basically, this is an off-season election, I get worried about off- season elections and will use this opportunity to plead with the National Assembly to block it.

“If we continue with this based on our laws by the judicial officers, there will be a time the Nigerian presidential election will be off-season.

“Nigeria should be worried, when I say Nigeria presidential election maybe off-season, they may ask how, but it almost happened in 2007 when I was the running-mate to late President Yar’Adu’a.”
