Mercy Corps, others engage Katsina women to enhance negotiation in conflict mitigation

Mercy Corps, CMCR North West Nigeria in conjunction with International Organizations for Immigration, IOM and Centre for Democracy and Development, CDD as funded by the European Union through its Interest-Based Negotiation, IBN have engaged forty-four women in Katsina State in a two-day training to enhanced their capacity in community conflict mitigation.

The two days training drew women from the Mercy Corps’ four project local government areas comprising Batsari, Jibia, Danmusa and Kankara of the State.
Senior Programme Officer, CMCR North West Nigeria, Linda Nkechi Emmanuel said the objective of the workshop was to enhance the capacity of the women in negotiation wing of Mercy Corps IBN model.
The women were taught on how negotiations could be achieved if communities avoid blame, ethnic profiling among other factors that could hinder peace negotiation in the conflict mitigation process.
The participants at the end of the training have agreed that following the persistent conflict, there is need for negotiation in the communities for the development to thrive and expressed interest in aiding reconciliation and development in their communities just as it is also the priorities of the Mercy Corps and partners as well as government.
“Community conflict mitigation initiative will reduce crime rates, to promote gender equality, the promotion of human rights, the preservation of cultural heritage among our communities and will of course create job opportunities to reduce unemployment and poverty”.

Highlights of the two days capacity training was analysing and practicing negotiation cases, how to increase inter-community relation dialogue in terms of crisis.
