Katsina State government has allocated some N7 billion towards the purchase of grains for resale at subsidized rates to less privileged persons across the 34 Local Government Areas.
This is apart from an additional N3 billion for the procurement of food items, including 25 kilogramme bags of rice, to be distributed free of charge to the elderly, disabled individuals, and other vulnerable members of society.
Governor Dikko Umar Radda made this known during the inauguration of committees at both State and local government levels tasked with overseeing the distribution process.
According to Radda, over 33,000 vulnerable and elderly individuals across the 361 electoral wards have been identified to receive the free foodstuff and cash.
“To ensure equitable access, the government has capped the purchase of grains at 10 measures per buyer, with each bag of maize, millet and guinea corn to sell at N20,000,” the Governor said.
Radda emphasized the importance of accountability in the distribution process, directing local government committees to remit proceeds from grains sales to the state committee for deposit into government accounts.
