High poverty level turning Katsina citizens to street beggars – Gov Radda
By Faith Awa Maji, Katsina
Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, has lamented the high poverty level in the state which he noted may have forced a number of households to find alternative solution in street begging for survival.
“Some people resort to street begging, thereby creating false impression and making up stories that the state is full of internally displaced persons, (IDPs),” the Governor said on Wednesday at the Government House, Katsina.
He spoke during a media briefing as part of activities marking his first year anniversary in office.
He noted that within the period under review, his administration has consistently involved stakeholders in the agriculture sector and other government agencies to cushion the effects of poverty among citizens.
Contrary to the news making around that IDPs are rooming the streets, Radda said that, Katsina town has no IDPs noting that all those villages that were ransacked by the bandits, his administration returned them to their communities with the help of security operatives.
“The most recent one in Baskari where residents ran due to the activities of bandits, were returned to their communities.
“Those people you see on the streets are people living within the metropolis and they are there is because of hunger.
“I said this because I had an interaction with one and after a persuasion, she told me that her husband left them without providing them food and that is why she was on the street to beg”, the Governor said.
