Cheers as Nasarawa Gov backs LG autonomy

The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has lauded the Nasarawa State Government for supporting the Supreme Court judgment on financial autonomy for Local Government Councils in the country.

The ALGON National President, Alhaji Aminu Muazu-Maifata, stated this on Thursday in Lafia when he led other ALGON Chairmen from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja on a courtesy call on the Acting Governor of Nasarawa State, Dr Emmanuel Akabe.

The chairman and other officials were in Nasarawa for their National Executive Council (NEC) meeting scheduled for Friday, July 20.

The ALGON President who doubles as Chairman of Lafia Local Government Area and ALGON Chairman in the state, said that the NEC meeting was decided to be held in Lafia as a mark of honour to him.

He further explained that it was also to honour Gov. Abdullahi Sule-led administration for being among the few governors in the country to allow area councils to operate freely even before the recent judgment by the apex court.

He also commended the state government for pledging to set up machinery in motion to ensure full implementation and compliance with the judgment.

Muazu-Maifata said that the association would discuss issues concerning the progress and development of the people at the grassroots to change the narrative during the NEC meeting.

Responding, the Deputy Governor said that government would not interfere with the finances of the local councils.
