The Nasarawa State Police Command has on Monday arraigned a gospel singer, Timilehin Ajayi before the High Court 2 Lafia over alleged murder and dismembering of his 24-year-old girlfriend, Salome Enejo, a serving corps member.
Addressing the court, Officer-In-Charge (OC), Stanley Ifeanyi of the Legal Department of the command, said the suspect was charged with one count of Culpable Homicide.
According to the OC Legal “the offense had violated section 221 of the Penal Code Law of Northern Nigeria and is punishable with death”.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty when the charge was read before him.
After listening to all counsels on the matter, Justice Simon Aboki, adjourned the case to March 17-20, 2025, for a hearing.
The adjournment was requested for by the prosecuting counsel after the accused pleaded not guilty to the charge against him.
The Judge promised to give the case an accelerated hearing due to its seriousness and ordered that the accused be remanded at the Lafia Custodian Centre pending the adjourned date.
Speaking to journalists shortly after the proceeding, the Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Jibrin Okutepa, who led other counsels for the family of the deceased, said they came to ensure that justice was served.
The SAN further said that Nigerians should be worried over how the deceased was burchard and said that the perpetrator must face the full wrath of the law.
On his part, the Defense Counsel, Joseph Tukur said that the defendant was arraigned and had entered his plea, and a date was taken for a hearing, explaining that his job was to defend the accused as the law demands, while the prosecuting counsels had the responsibility to prove their case beyond reasonable doubt.
Recall the alleged murderer was arrested by worshippers of a church on Sunday, January 12, 2025, in Orozo, a community bordering the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, and Nasarawa State as he was found carrying a polybag containing the head of the deceased at the time of his arrest.
