Eggon people to host 2025 International Museum Day in Plateau

The Eggon Community, in collaboration with the National Commission for Museums and Monuments will host the 2025 edition of the International Museum Day (IMD) on May 20th through 21st, 2025.

International Museum Day is an annual celebration held to promote awareness about the importance of museums in society and is coordinated by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) and is celebrated in over 150 countries worldwide.

This is contained in a statement made available to newsmen on Wednesday in Lafia, Nasarawa State by the Chairman, Media and Publicity subcommittee of the day indicated that the year’s celebration, themed ‘The Place of Museums In a Rapidly Changing Economy’ will take place at the National Museum, Jos, Plateau State capital.

According to the statement “The Eggon Community, in collaboration with the National Commission for Museums and Monuments, is pleased to announce its readiness to host the 2025 edition of the International Museum Day (IMD) on May 20th and 21st, 2025.

“This year’s celebration, themed ‘The Place of Museums In a Rapidly Changing Economy’, will take place at the National Museum, Jos, and promises to be an exciting and enriching experience for participants.

“The Eggon people, known for their rich cultural heritage and warm hospitality, are eager to showcase their traditions, customs, and historical artefacts to the world. The event will feature a range of activities, including cultural performances, exhibitions, workshops, and lectures.

“To guarantee an unprecedented attendance, a vigorous mobilisation campaign is currently underway, rallying Eggon people from all corners of Nigeria to converge and participate in the momentous events commemorating International Museum Day.

“In a historic departure from its traditional one-day format, the 2025 International Museum Day (IMD) celebration will, for the first time ever, span two days. This decision, sanctioned by the management of the National Museum office in Jos, promises to deliver an even more enriching and immersive experience for participants.

“The festivities will culminate in a spectacular gala night, displaying an enchanting array of traditional dances and mesmerizing music, providing a fitting conclusion to the event”.

According to the President of the Eggon Cultural and Development Association (ECDA), Dr Mandy David Abuluya, “We are thrilled to host this prestigious event and share our unique cultural identity with the global community. We believe that this celebration will not only promote cross-cultural understanding but also contribute to the preservation of our cultural heritage.”

The statement further explained that the International Museum Day celebration is expected to attract participants from across Nigeria. “The event is free and open to the public.

“Expected as Special Guests of Honour at the two-day event are the Executive Governors of Nasarawa and Plateau States, Engr Abdullahi A. Sule and Barrister Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang respectively.

“The Aren Eggon, His Highness Honourable Justice Ahmed Ubangari Alaku I, CJ Rtd, OFR will be the Royal Father of the day and the Gbong Gwom Jos, Da Jacob Gyang Buba will be the Grand Royal Father of the day.

“Several high-profile dignitaries are expected to attend the International Museum Day 2025 celebrations, lending their prestige and support to the event.
His Royal Highness, the Emir of Lafia and Chairman, Nasarawa State Traditional Council of Chiefs, Honourable Justice Sidi Bage Muhammad I, will graciously serve as the Chairman of the opening ceremony, while the Honourable Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim will be the Chairlady and Senator Patricia N. Akwashiki will be the Mother of the Day.

“Other notable attendees include: Chief Joshua C. Dariye, former Governor of Plateau State, who will chair the main event.

“Guest Speaker: Professor Victor S. Dugga, Provost, College of Postgraduate Studies, Federal University of Lafia

“Keynote Speaker at the Gala Night: Professor Hamid Ozohu Suleiman, Dept of Public Administration, University of Abuja. Nigeria.

“Their presence will undoubtedly add depth and significance to the celebrations, highlighting the importance of cultural heritage and preservation”.
