Katsina women Journalists, Police collaborate to end Gender-Based-Violence

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) Katsina State Chapter alongside the State Police command had on Thursday agreed to collaborate to end Gender-Based-Violence in the State.

They made this known on Thursday when the NAWOJ paid the Commissioner of Police, Katsina State, CP Bello Shehu at the command headquarters, Katsina.

The visit underscores the association’s commitment to fostering strong partnership between journalists especially women and law enforcement in promoting ethical journalism as well as addressing societal issues.

Earlier in her speech, the Chairperson of NAWOJ, Katsina State chapter, Hannatu Mohammed acknowledged the existing cordial relationship between the police and journalists in Katsina State while emphasising the need for deeper collaboration to enhance news reportage and public engagement.

According to her, “there is an urgent need for the Command’s intervention in addressing gender-based violence and other challenges faced by women in the community”.

She sought the Commissioner’s support in creating a safer environment for women and improving the overall effectiveness of the association and expressed gratitude to CP Bello Shehu for his warm reception.

Responding, CP Bello Shehu, reaffirmed the Katsina State Police Command’s commitment to maintaining a strong partnership with journalists and encouraged them to verify sensitive information with the Command before publication and assured the Command’s readiness to respond promptly to media inquiries, highlighting the importance of creating a supportive environment for journalists in the State to thrives.

Shehu emphasised that the Command is actively taking proactive measures to tackle issues related to gender-based violence and other challenges affecting women and their association. “We are taking a proactive approach in tackling Gender-Based-Violence related cases to have a society of gender equity”.

He expressed appreciation for the visit and commended NAWOJ for its dedication in promoting ethical journalism.

NAWOJ remains committed to advocating for women’s rights and promotion of ethical journalism standards while advocating for collaborative efforts to combat gender-based violence in our communities.
